Dār al-Mahāmid - the home of praiseworthy qualities
Mahāmid: The plural of the Arabic word Mahmadah, which means " that quality or action for which a person is commended for or becomes commendable ".
The plural, Mahāmid, in short, therefore means praise-worthy qualities.

Our motto is Towards Perfecting Character, which has been inspired by the legacy, life, teachings and personality of our beloved Nabi Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam who said:

إنما بعثت لأتمم صالح الأخلاق تعليق شعيب الأرنؤوط : صحيح وهذا إسناد قوي رجاله رجال الصحيح غير محمد بن عجلان فقد روى له مسلم متابعة وهو قوي الحديث

"I have only been sent to perfect excellent character"

About Us

In 2011 Moulana Irshaad Sedick and his wife Mualima Shamiela Abrahams founded Dār al-Mahāmid. A non-profit academic institution aimed at uplifting the local community through education. It began with a two year AQS (arabic and quran studies) programme focussing on learning the fundamentals of the arabic language to understand the quran. The first 6 months introduced students to arabic grammar( nahu, sarf, i'raab) and tafsir. The second 6 months focused more on an indepth study of the grammar and starting to apply it certain surahs of the quran. The second year was devoted to applying the grammar you learnt in first year to Juz 30 and the oft recited surahs. New grammar was learnt relative to the surahs as well as their tafsir and virtues. It is also a place to learn arabic in Cape Town, South Africa.

The senior years, 3rd years and up, focus on the different islamic sciences - sira, qasas, fiqh, hadith, aqida, tafsir - however learning them from their orginal arabic texts. So students could get familiar with reading and understanding arabic texts.

At the end of 2015 a survey was done to assess the current AQS programme, teaching style, and content. Based on the feedback, the staff and senior students revamped the AQS programme into the Islamic Sciences Programme and Usul ul-Din Programme to meet the needs of the students and international standards. See below for more information.
